Caring for Your Lawn in the Fall: 4 Tips from Leading Landscape Company, Arbor Enterprises in Pittsboro

With the chill in the air, and days that are gradually becoming shorter and shorter, it’s clear that fall has arrived. Fall is a special time for gardens as tree leaves turn varying shades of orange and yellow and changes are made to prepare for the coming winter.

It’s also an important time to get ahead of the changes that need to be made to prepare your lawn for the colder weather. Keep in mind that the preparation work that you do now will have a significant impact on how your lawn will recover from a long, hot summer and will ensure that it survives the cold months from November onwards.

Arbor Enterprises, a leading Pittsboro-based landscape company, offers lawn care as part of their landscape and maintenance services. They share their top lawn care tip for the fall:

Raking Leaves for Optimal Lawn Health

While a blanket of brightly colored fall leaves adds to the beauty of your yard, they do have the potential to trigger and promote the growth of lawn fungus.

Lawn fungal disease can typically be identified when brown or yellow patches appear on a lawn in rings that grow over time. It can also appear as dark, wet, or slimy areas which stunt the growth of grass in the affected area.

The leaves contribute to the development of the fungus as they form a mat that lies on top of the grass, blocking sunlight and trapping in moisture. This environment provides the perfect conditions for the fungus to thrive.

The best way to prevent lawn fungus is to regularly rake or use a leaf blower to remove leaves and other debris from your lawn which will allow your grass to breathe as well as prevent the build-up of moisture.

Mowing the Lawn to Stimulate Growth

As with fallen leaves, grass that is too long is also susceptible to lawn fungus. Conversely, grass that is too short will have the effect of stunting root growth. Often homeowners will tend to cut the grass as short as possible to minimize the frequency with which the lawn needs to be mowed.

Arbor Enterprises recommends an alternative approach. They suggest rather raising your lawnmower to the highest setting and mowing more frequently. Lawns should be mown throughout fall until the first frost hits.

An extra bonus of regular mowing allows you to grind up leftover leaves that can be funnelled into your grass.

Lawn Fertilization to Repair Sun-Damage Areas and Protect Grass Roots

Fall is the perfect time to fertilize your lawn. Early fall fertilization will help to repair your lawn from the harsh, drying heat of summer. This can be followed up with late fall fertilization which will prepare and protect the grass root for the coming cold of winter. The milder temperatures of fall, coupled with the benefit of longer-lasting morning dew, make it the optimal time for your lawn to effectively absorb nutrients from the fertilizer. Do not forget to water once the seed becomes saturated.

Get Ahead of the Cold by Winterizing Your Sprinkler System

If your lawn has an irrigation system, it will need to be prepared for winter conditions. This process will prevent any water from freezing in pipes which could lead to them bursting, causing costly damage to the system.

Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal with a Landscape Installation

There a lot more to landscaping than having a good-looking lawn. Landscaping can dramatically improve the curb appeal of your home and add to the value of your property. Leading Pittsboro landscape design company, Arbor Enterprises shares their top tips for raising curb appeal in a way that’s effective and affordable.

1. Create Privacy

Here you may choose to plant evergreens along your property line. While neighbors can be great, adding privacy means that you never feel on display and you have personal space in your garden away from the eyes of neighbors and people walking past.

Natural alternatives to conventional fencing add a screen while contributing to the aesthetic appeal of your garden. Evergreens, in particular, are effective as they stay green all year round. If there is not enough space to plant trees, raised planter boxes can also be effective.

2. Invest in Landscape Lighting

Lighting up the entranceway and other areas of the garden is a good way to enhance curb appeal, especially when the property is viewed after dark. Don’t limit your landscape design ideas to trees, plants, and lawn – expanding the design to include outdoor lighting can have a powerful impact both visually and functionally on your outdoor areas. The entrance to a home is a good place to start, making it easy to navigate from the sidewalk to the front door. This creates a welcoming feeling after dark, as well as providing safety and security. From there you can expand to other areas of your garden.

3. Spread Fresh Mulch

Adding mulch to flower beds and entry paths enhances the look of existing plants making them seem brighter and fuller. It can also be added to areas around trees. Depending on the quality of mulch that you opt for; this can be an inexpensive way to add new life to your garden without having to do any significant hardscaping or soft-soaping. Working with a landscape company ensures that the mulch will be added as part of the installation if it is needed.

4. Add Curves, Edges, and Corners

If you’d like to take a bigger step and make structural changes to your garden, you can dramatically improve your home’s curb appeal. By adding crisp edging to a flower bed, you can boost your yard’s aesthetic appeal. This is best done with the help of a professional landscaping company who will be able to suggest the changes you can make that will balance the need to create a sense of space with creating curves and edges that are appealing to the eye.

5. Work on Beautifully Green Grass

Regular lawn care will boost the color and cover of your grass. Keep in mind that for every inch of grass that’s visible above the ground, there’s at least an inch of roots below the ground. Cutting the grass too short may cause the roots to die. Hiring a company that offers specialist lawn care services will ensure that your grass gets a new lease on life.

Arbor Enterprises in Pittsboro, NC, has the experience and expertise to help you boost your home’s curb appeal. They offer a full-service landscape contracting service and have been helping residents in the local community grow beautiful gardens since 1991. Summer Landscaping: How to Help Plants Thrive, Not Just Survive

With spring lawn care a distant memory, and summer garden plants in full swing, the work that was done with so much enthusiasm a couple months ago is now starting to bear fruit. And while it may have been enjoyable to do the initial planting, with a long summer ahead, it can be easy to lose interest in outdoor plants. Plants are an investment, they bring happiness to a home, but they are also a financial investment. Arbor Enterprises, a leading landscape design build company in Pittsboro, NC, shares the top five tips for getting the most out of a garden. These landscape designer tips will help keep outdoor plants thriving, not just surviving, during the hot summer months.

Summer Landscaping | Consider Plant Choices Carefully

Choosing the right plants for the Pittsboro climate is essential; it is difficult to have success with a plant that is not suited to the region. Working with a leading landscape architect such as Arbor Enterprises in Pittsboro, NC can ensure proper plant selection as they have many years of experience with plants in the area and will be able to give a good framework of greenery that can be planted successfully. If this means planting different types of plants, it may be a good idea to start small and replant a little area of the garden first. If the new plants thrive, that is a good way to know what to invest in going forward.

Summer Landscaping | Focus on Plant Placement

When purchasing plants, it is important to note the description tag that accompanies all garden plants and greenery. The description tag always gives an indication of how much sun the plant will need, which can be easy to forget if there are a large number of plants being planted. Keep the tag that comes with the plant so that when it comes to having a professional landscape design company place each of the plants in the overall yard design, it will be easier to know the optimal position for getting the required amount of sunlight.

Summer Landscaping | Deadhead Plants If Necessary

Plants such as petunias and geraniums will need to be deadheaded as their blooms die. This simple process means pinching or cutting off the stem below the dead bloom, just above the healthy leaves. The reason for this is that dead blooms weaken the plant and consume energy and resources that should rather be allocated to the rest of the plant. Deadheading ensures that the plant is both healthier and fuller looking.

Summer Landscaping | Keep Watering Plants

The major cause of plant death during the summer months is a lack of water. Pittsboro, NC landscape company, Arbor Enterprises, suggests that the key here is to establish a routine for watering plants. Consistent watering, best done either in the early morning or late evening, will ensure that the plants remain hydrated. Remember always to water the soil and roots rather than the leaves and flowers.

Summer Landscaping | Plan Ahead for Lawn Service

If there are summer travel plans to look forward to, it is important to have a backup solution in place for ensuring that the plants still get the water they need. This may mean asking a neighbor, friend or a reliable landscape company to water the garden plants and greenery. This will ensure that the plants remain well hydrated during any planned absences.

Arbor Enterprises in Pittsboro, NC, specializes in helping members of their community get the most out of their gardens. As a professional landscape design build company, they offer a full range of services to all homeowners with softscaping, hardscaping, lawn care and tree removal solutions to match the needs of each garden. With many years of experience and excellent customer service, they go out of their way to ensure that customers get the garden of their dreams and have an excellent experience.

Landscape Design and Landscape Installation with the Right Plants in Pittsboro, NC

With over 30 years of experience in landscape design and landscape installation, Arbor Enterprises shares their specialized knowledge on what plants to choose for a yard in Pittsboro, NC. When choosing the right plant for the space, it is important to consider sun exposure, drainage, and soil type, as well as the dimensions of the plant at full size. With this short list, one should then think about personal preferences and other considerations.

Sun Exposure

There are three basic categories for sun exposure: full sun, part sun, and light shade. Full sun means that the plant is exposed to at least 8 hours of sunlight per day. Part sun means there is at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. For morning sun, this is usually gentler and as such shaded plants can still work well in these areas. Afternoon sun tends to be hotter and harsher, and thus will mean that sun-tolerant plants need to be chosen for these areas. Light shade refers to shade that is casted by pine trees. It is different from dark shade from buildings or hardwood trees.

Drainage and Soil Type

Here, is it important to consider whether the area is poorly drained, moist, well-drained or xeric. Poorly drained or wet areas are where water stagnates for a long period of time after rainfall, this is usually indicative of soil with high clay content.  Moist areas are damp most of the time and water drains away within 24 hours after rainfall ends. Rainfall in well-drained areas drains away within a couple of hours of rainfall ending and is an indicator of sandy soil. Xeric soil is extremely sandy, in these areas water never stands but rather immediately drains away.

It’s also important to keep in mind that in shaded areas, competition from tree roots may cause the soil to be drier.

Plant Size When Full-Grown

It’s easy to underestimate the full size of a plant – they tend to grow larger and faster than anticipated. This leads to many issues such as in new landscape plants being placed too close together or too close to the house. For trees, in particular, it is important to have a good idea of how wide and tall they will grow before planting.

Personal Preferences

Choosing plants for a garden is very personal; different plants appeal to different people for a wide variety of reasons. Different factors that may influence these choices include the color of the plant (looking at both the flowers and the foliage), the fragrance, the screening and shade that the plant offers, and whether the plant is high or low maintenance.

Other Considerations

Once the choices have been narrowed down, there are a couple of other considerations that need to be taken into account. The plants should be attractive to wildlife such as bees (for pollination) and birds; they should not have serious pest problems, be non-invasive and easily available from nurseries.

The right plant for landscaping design in Pittsboro, NC is one that is adapted to the local climate as well as being adapted to the specific site conditions (this includes sun exposure, soil type, and drainage). It also needs to be the right size for the space, something that you like and is not invasive. It also needs to be easily available to purchase.

For help with landscape installation and plant choices, contact Arbor Enterprises, a leading landscape company in Pittsboro, NC. From tree trimming to lawn care and more, they are able to help with any landscaping requirements. In addition to softscaping, such as plant selection, they can also help with hardscaping projects such as patio designs, pool landscaping ideas, and irrigation installation.

Fearrington Light Railway WOF Home Tour 2019

Fearrington Light Railway
The Route of the Beltie
The Fearrington Light Railway (FLR) is a freelanced subdivision of the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad (SR&RL), an actual 2-foot narrow gauge railroad that operated in northern Maine from the 1880s to 1935. The time period depicted on the FLR is circa 1931. In this schematic drawing, the floor boards have been omitted from the grilling deck (upper left), to show the tracks passing underneath.
We moved into our new home in December of 2016. Work on the railroad began in June of 2017. Paige Moody of Arbor Enterprises built the patio, water feature, and major landscaping. David Mozier of Mozier Builders constructed the grilling deck and the two sets of stairs. Both did a terrific job bringing my design sketches to life. I laid the first loop of track in the fall of 2017. The structures came from my previous garden railroad in PA. All except the steel truss bridge and the wooden turntable bridge were scratch-built by me, based on New England prototypes. They are weatherproof, and remain outdoors year round. I also assembled the full-size foot bridge, from a kit.

Left: Strong, Maine on the SR&RL, circa 1930.    Right: Fearrington Junction on the FLR.

The track is brass, and is supported by gravel ballast, just as on the prototype. All switches are manually operated, also as on the prototype. The engines are radio controlled, and powered by battery or live steam. The steam locomotives burn camp stove fuel (butane/isobutane). Track gauge (the distance between the rails) is 45 mm, aka “Gauge 1.” The scale (ratio between the model and prototype) ranges from 1:24 (1/2” to the foot) to 1:13.7 (7/8” to the foot). For comparison, O scale trains (e.g. Lionel) are 1:48 (¼” to the foot). Plants adjacent to tracks are selected to be “in scale” with the railroad as well, with tiny leaves or needles and overall size, such as creeping juniper, dwarf cedar, and dwarf boxwood, and groundcovers such as sedum, phlox, Scotch moss, and various thymes.
Projects like this are never “finished.” There are always gardening chores to attend to, and I have a list of structures and rolling stock to build, details to add, etc. That said, I have designed the railroad to be as low-maintenance as possible, so that I can enjoy it for as long as possible. I hope you enjoy it as well!

Tips for Success in Your Landscape Design in Pittsboro NC

Leading landscape installation company, Arbor enterprises, shares their insights on how to get the most from your landscape installation this Spring.

For homeowners looking to take advantage of the Spring weather and get going with bigger landscaping projects, there are some principles to keep in mind. Using these principles will ensure that the landscape design makes the most of the space available and highlights the natural focal points of a garden.

Arbor Enterprises, one of the best landscape companies in Pittsboro NC, suggests keeping the garden focal points in mind, as well as looking for ways to accent the home, make careful plant selections, add movement and curves and use contrasting colors. It is also important to plan for landscaping equipment access before the landscape design is finalized.

Create Focal Points

The idea of having a focal point is to visually direct one through your garden. When someone looks at your garden, they should be immediately drawn to the focal point, and it should elicit emotions such as surprise, excitement or a sense of calm or beauty. It should vary in form, color or texture from the rest of the garden. It could be a statue, bench, tree or even a view. We have enlisted the services of a mural artist to paint a garden scene on a stucco wall.

Accent the Home

The addition of plants around your home helps soften the edges and can be used to obscure elements that detract from the overall aesthetic nature of a property. Aim for a balance here as overdoing it could lead to a home that looks like it is being hidden by overgrown shrubbery. An effective landscaping design will highlight the best features of a house, whether it is a small starter home or a larger family residence.

Informed Plant Choices

When choosing plants for a garden, it's important to think long-term and make decisions based on the full grown size of a plant. Also bear in mind that while it may be tempting to choose faster-growing plants that reach maturity sooner, they will require ongoing maintenance and pruning. Good spacing between plants will encourage better air circulation to prevent fungal and insect problems, and space between the plants can be filled with annuals.

Add Curves and Movement Rather Than Symmetry

Curves add a sense of interest to a garden's design, and for most homeowners bring a more flexible style. Complement the curves with movement through the introduction of grasses that sway in the breeze and plant flowers and berry producers to attract butterflies and birds.

Pittsboro Landscape Design: Perfect Time for New Life in your Garden

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A New Year is the Perfect Time to Plan for New Life in Your Garden

Owner of Arbor Enterprises, a specialist landscape design company in Pittsboro, NC, shares top tips for encouraging new growth in your garden in winter.

Common wisdom holds that most gardening should happen during spring, but there are a couple of things that you can do, even in the middle of winter, to encourage new growth and prepare your garden for the coming warmer spring months.

Paige Moody, owner of Arbor Enterprise in Pittsboro, NC, dispels the myth that there is nothing that can be done in the garden during winter. In addition to any hardscaping projects that you might have paused during the warmer months, there are also some essential gardening tasks that should be tackled during the winter months. Moody commented on this saying, “Often clients say to me that their gardens are taking a break during winter, and I always take this opportunity to explain the importance of pruning during winter, as well as planting the right vegetables during the colder months.”

Pittsboro Landscape Design Contractor, Pittsboro Landscape Design Company, Pittsboro Landscape Design

To keep your garden healthy, Moody recommends that pruning must happen at the right time. It is better to trim trees and shrubs in late winter, rather than waiting for spring. Limbs that are wounded can become infected over the winter leading to the disease becoming established while the plant remains dormant. By pruning in late winter, it is possible to prevent the disease from spreading and affecting new growth.

Late winter storms may impact your decision as they can cause new damage, but it is still recommended to trim back a broken limb rather than ignoring it until spring. As is always the case, sharp tools that are able make clean cuts should be used as these cuts will heal more quickly and remember to always cut back to healthy, living tissue for best results.

If you have a vegetable garden, there are a number of vegetables that can be planted even if the rest of your garden is dormant. Arbor’s top six recommendations are:

  • Garlic - set out bulbs 4 inches apart, don’t water them until shoots begin to poke out of the ground if they are not already receiving rain water. Garlic plants require very little room or maintenance.
  • Leeks – these are an inexpensive vegetable to purchase and can be harvested throughout the year.
  • Onions – the best time to plant onions (either seeds or bulbs) is in January and February. Bulbs are easier to grow successfully.
  • Radishes – there are a number of different varieties to choose from, and they grow easily and quickly.
  • Peas – November and February are the best months to plant peas, you will need to give them something to climb up and wrap their tendrils around.
  • Potatoes – February is a good month to plant potatoes, and they will be ready to harvest around 3 months later.

Staying on top of pruning and planting tasks year-round can be a challenge but, by taking advantage of the quieter winter months, you can get a head start on growing the garden that you want. The two areas to focus on are planting winter vegetables and pruning trees and shrubs in preparation for spring.

Pittsboro Landscaper Offers a Start-to-Finish Solution for Home with Small Gardens

If you’re thinking of re-doing your garden this season, but because your garden is small you don’t think you have many options, Arbor Enterprises is here to help you bring your dream garden to life.

Arbor Enterprises in Pittsboro, NC is a landscaper known for their green fingers as well as their commitment to their customers. That is why one of the top concerns that they hear on almost a daily basis is along these lines: “I’d love to hire you to completely re-imagine my garden, but it’s so small, I don’t think there’s much that can be done to improve the space.”

This season Arbor Enterprises, led by Paige Moody is setting out to change these misconceptions. Although they are in high demand for their hardscape design and landscape installation services, they understand that for many Pittsboro residents, there is a need for a service that caters to smaller yards and spaces.

Some of the top changes that Arbor Enterprises recommends includes paying close attention to plant choice, using pots and thinking out the box. They also suggest incorporating other non-living elements and making the space inviting so that more time is spent outside.

As Paige from Arbor Enterprises suggests, “the choice of plants is critical if you have a small garden. It may be fine to have one or two larger trees, but in general smaller, focal point plants will help the area feel more spacious.” Choosing conifers or succulents is a good place to start as they grow slowly which means that your garden is likely to stay looking neat for a longer period of time.

Arbor Enterprises also suggests the use of containers as they can be moved around if necessary, as well as being low maintenance and can add some much-needed height to a small garden. Aside from regular pots, vertical or hanging plants can be a creative way to incorporate more greenery into a small area.

Pittsboro LandscaperOther elements that can help transform your garden, according to Paige Moody, are the use of water features, creating small paved areas and investing in garden furniture. All of these work together to maximize the outdoor space and make it inviting to spend more time outside enjoying your garden.

As specialists in brick paver designs and other hardscape design, Arbor Enterprises can combine their ability to design creative solutions that incorporate landscape design best practices with their expertise in implementing hardscape elements. With the focus on small gardens, they are able to leverage their extensive experience and commitment to even the smallest garden to create a backyard garden paradise.

As landscape specialists in both landscape design and maintenance, Arbor Enterprises offers the necessary follow-up services to keep gardens in top shape, providing a full-service maintenance offering that can be customized according to the needs of their clients. These services include plant care and lawn care as well as pruning, transplanting, fertilization, weed, and insect control services.

As leaders of landscaper in Pittsboro landscape design and landscape installation, Arbor Enterprises continues to innovate; presenting fresh, exciting ideas to their clients whether they have sprawling estates in need of tree trimming or removal and lawn care services; or small backyard spaces that are in need of an experienced landscape designer to transform them. They offer consultation services, and their customer focus ensures that they will always do the best job possible on your garden whatever its size.

As Moody says, “It’s important to understand what a client is asking for, but sometimes it means reading between the lines,” she went on to explain, “clients come to me wanting a beautiful garden, and it’s for us at Arbor Enterprises to get creative and deliver something beyond what they could have hoped for.”

Although North Carolina is the 13th best state in which to start a business according to a recent survey, it is still a challenge to build and grow a small business in the US with over 50% of new companies failing within the first 4 years, and the fact that only 40 percent of small businesses are profitable.

Arbor Enterprises, it seems, is determined to meet these challenges head-on, and with their impressive array of services, they continue to adapt and grow to meet the needs of their customers with innovative landscape installation. Two of their most exciting offerings for new clients are their landscape design services and their enhancement services. Arbor Enterprises’ enhancement services work to take their clients’ yards and transform them into the garden of their dreams offering an end-to-end solution from master planning and site plan evaluation to plant selection, irrigation installation, and drainage solutions. Their team can also assist with hardscape design and consultations on tree trimming and removal and plant health care.

Their design services are focused on hardscape construction details that perfectly blend into the style and design of their clients’ gardens. They offer options such as retaining walls, patio construction, walkways and outdoor lighting installations, irrigation repair, and maintenance, as well as the installation of functional and decorative elements like steps and ponds.

Lawn Care Pittsboro NC, Lawn Care Service Pittsboro NCFor their existing clients, they have a full-service maintenance offering that can be customized as needed for lawn care and plant care. They provide excellent advice on plant care including pruning and will share on which plants should be pruned, as well as the best times for pruning. They offer transplanting, so that precious plants can be moved without harm to different areas of your garden. Arbor Enterprises also offers fertilization, weed and insect control and mulching to keep plants in top condition throughout the year. In this respect, they will take customers preferences into account and can offer alternatives to harmful pesticides and other concerns.

In terms of turf care, Arbor Enterprises offers more than mowing. As lawn care service experts, clients can expect their lawns to look better than they ever have with options for lawn fertilization, weed control, on-going soil testing, as well as specialist services for seeding, aerating, dethatching and sodding.

At Arbor Enterprises in Pittsboro, NC, Moody and her team understand the importance of selling the dream. While the company has the necessary expertise and experience to carry out even the most challenging landscaping work, customers often need help with knowing what they want and being able to visualize this. Moody believes that is what makes their company different from all the others, “we take the time to listen to our customers, instead of telling them what they need, we really try to hear what they’re saying and tailor our services to meet this need.”
